Olga, from Latvia, reached out in February for help with her 6-year-old son who has very clear multiple and complex needs.

He was enrolled in a school but they had not been in touch to get him in. The school had said from the outset they could not meet his needs but were not being particularly helpful to Olga to get her what she needed to move forward.

After a video call with her, I discovered that there had been no professional input or support to apply for an EHCP needs assessment. We drafted emails to the school, her GP, and a private paediatrician. I then supported her in a school meeting to understand the situation. The school was reluctant to request an EHCP assessment until they had completed 3 rounds of their graduated response, which wouldn't be until the end of July.

I helped her write a parental request for an EHCP assessment, which was accepted by the LA, who have since issued an EHCP. We are now considering schools for her child. I will continue to support her in other multi-agency meetings. Additionally, I assisted her in securing an appointment with a private paediatrician for a NICE-compliant multidisciplinary assessment for Autism, which led to a diagnosis. I attended this appointment with her. I have attended many appointments with Olga such as SALT and community paediatrician appointments. I have also supported Olga in CIN meetings to ensure that her views were heard and she was able to engage meaningfully with the meeting. 

I also sat down with her to fill out her Disability Living Allowance (DLA) form and apply for a blue badge for parking for her son which was also issued to her.

"Getting your child the help they need at school is hugely challenging. You’ve never done this before, you don’t know the process or how to get the best outcome. You don’t know what help is available or how to access it, so professional advice and support is invaluable and Send Services was an enormous help to me.

Having already applied for an EHCP and in receipt of a draft, I approached Karishma from Send Services to help me with my next steps.
